Cambridge University loses bid to ban pro-Palestine protests on university sites

A U.K. judge rejected Cambridge University’s request to impose a five-year injunction banning pro-Palestinian protests on its premises, restricting demonstrations only during this Saturday’s graduation ceremony. The decision was hailed as a victory for free speech by human rights organizations. Gina Romero, UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Peaceful Assembly, criticized the move, urging Cambridge to respect international human rights standards and not to stigmatize the Palestine solidarity movement, warning that blanket bans on protests are “disproportionate” and contrary to universities’ obligations to protect peaceful assemblies.
