Elections and global crises put freedom of expression to the test

Across the world, the right to peaceful assembly and association is being trampled on. Gina Romero, the new UN special rapporteur, shares her concerns.

Gina Romero, the new UN Special Rapporteur, expresses concern about the increasing repression of activists, students and environmental defenders, who face stigmatization, violence and legal restrictions, as in the case of pro-Palestinian student protests and unfounded accusations against environmentalists under anti-terrorism laws. Romero also highlights the impact of technology in the surveillance and censorship of social movements, as well as electoral manipulation and political violence in countries such as Guatemala and Mexico. He calls for the defense of democratic rights and the protection of civil society actors from these threats.
