Hybrid Side-Event HRC50: Protect Protest Rights in the context of Crisis Situations

In his new report to the Human Rights Council, UN Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, Clément N. Voule,  urges states to hear and consider protesters’ voices during peaceful protests in crisis situations, reaffirming the importance peaceful protest has for a democratic, just and peaceful society.

In the report he examines key global trends that seriously impede the protection of human rights in the context of peaceful protests in crisis situations. They include stigmatization, abuse of emergency measures, militarization and use of unlawful force to stifle peaceful protests, compounded by endemic impunity for serious violations.

On the occasion of the presentation of the report to the 50th Human Rights Council, this hybrid side event will bring together protest rights activist from around the globe to discuss report findings States’ management of peaceful protests during crises in their part of the world.
