In her latest report to the Human Rights Council (HRC-59), the UN Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, Gina Romero, examines how the 2023–2025 “super” election cycle has been marked by growing restrictions on civic space and democratic participation worldwide.
The report highlights alarming trends, including the misuse of surveillance technologies, repressive laws, violence against political and civil actors, and regulatory gaps that threaten rights before, during, and after elections. It also provides concrete recommendations to safeguard democratic integrity and ensure free and inclusive participation.
