Preserving the gains and pushing back against the global attack on civic space and growing authoritarianism

During the 56th session of the Human Rights Council, the Special Rapporteur presented the latest report of former Special Rapporteur Voule, titled “Preserving the Gains and pushing back against the global attack civic space and growing authoritarianism”.

This document highlights the progress made in promoting these rights since the creation of the mandate in 2010 and warns of growing global threats, such as the closing of civic space, the expansion of authoritarianism and the misuse of emerging technologies to stifle social participation. The report underscores the importance of these freedoms as fundamental pillars for democracy and the protection of human rights.

Based on global consultations and input from civil society organizations, the report includes recommendations to counter these threats, strengthen global partnerships and protect civic space. This document, presented by the current Special Rapporteur, Gina Romero, highlights the urgency of collective action to preserve these essential rights and foster a more inclusive and democratic environment.
