The UN Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, Gina Romero, expressed deep concern over the U.S. administration’s decision to freeze federal funding and foreign aid. This measure, implemented without proper transparency or consultation, puts at risk the work of civil society organizations that defend human rights, democracy, and sustainable development, particularly in vulnerable communities across the Global South. In a letter signed by 35 UN experts, it is warned that such actions undermine the right to freedom of association and access to resources—both of which are essential for the functioning of associations and the protection of rights worldwide.
