UK university drops case against students over shared Middle East Eye posts

The University of Essex (United Kingdom) closed the case against six students investigated for sharing Middle East Eye posts about the death of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, after more than 200 days of a process that put their academic standing at risk and, in one case, even their visa. Although the university acknowledged the lack of evidence of harassment or support for proscribed groups, it criticized the posts as ‘challenging’ and required freedom of expression training. The UN Special Rapporteur, Gina Romero, condemned these actions, reminding that public institutions must protect the right to free expression and association, without stigmatizing peaceful pro-Palestine activism. The case reflects a pattern of surveillance and repression in British universities toward protesters, previously documented by human rights organizations.
