During a talk at Harvard Law School, the United Nations Special Rapporteur urged the university to firmly uphold freedom of expression and protect its international students from deportation threats by the Trump administration. Romero criticized the response of U.S. universities to pro-Palestine protests, denouncing discriminatory policies, disproportionate use of force, and administrative sanctions that particularly impact Black and Arab students. She emphasized that fear of deportation seriously limits international students’ right to assemble and called on academic institutions to take a stand in the face of power and resist external pressure. Romero also shared her experience as a newly appointed Special Rapporteur and denounced double standards in responses to student movements, warning that restricting young people’s rights is a way to silence an entire generation.
