#IWD2021: Ensuring Women’s Right to Peaceful Assembly
Wednesday, 3 March 2021

The International Center for Not-for-Profit Law (ICNL), the Mesoamerican Initiative of Women Human Rights Defenders, and the Special Rapporteur on the Rights to Freedom of Peaceful Assembly and of Association are pleased to invite you to an event focused on ensuring women’s right to peaceful assembly.2020 witnessed some of the biggest International Women’s Day demonstrations in history, with women around the world participating despite attempts to prevent them from joining. With IWD 2021 around the corner, concerns have been raised about the risks of new digital attacks and arbitrary enforcement of COVID-19 measures. The Special Rapporteur’s latest thematic report, which addresses the rights of women and girls to peaceful assembly and association, indicates that demonstrations celebrating IWD continue to be violently attacked in many countries around the world.

The webinar brings together experts to reflect on these challenges and how they impact women’s ability to fully enjoy their right to peaceful assembly. Speakers will consider the importance of the right of assembly to achieve the realization of women’s rights. They will explore trends in restrictions of women’s rights mobilization online and offline, as well as strategies and promising practices being adopted to protect women’s right to peaceful assembly as the world continues to face COVID-19.
