Peaceful Protests in Crisis

Protect Protest Rights in the context of Crisis

Protection of human rights in the context of peaceful protests during crisis situations  (A/HRC/50/42)

In the present report, to be presented at the 50th session of the Human Rights Council in June 2022, the Special Rapporteur examines key global trends that seriously impede the protection of human rights in the context of peaceful protests in crisis situations.

They include stigmatization, abuse of emergency measures, militarization and use of unlawful force to stifle peaceful protests, compounded by endemic impunity for serious violations.

In the report he urges States to hear and consider protesters’ voices during peaceful protests in crisis situations, reaffirming the importance peaceful protest has for a democratic, just and peaceful society.
